It may seem odd to display a first-person shooter alongside purses and fleece vests, but there's one that deserves to be sold at Old Navy. The arrival of "Bulletstorm" is like an announcement to the world: Shooting is fun again!
How refreshing to play a first-person shooter with an ambition higher than reminding people of "Call of Duty." "Call of Duty" may have Kobe Bryant in its commercials, but "Bulletstorm" has contracted with that far more elusive star, fun.
A joint project of Epic Games and People Can Fly, "Bulletstorm" is probably the closest thing we have to the video game Beavis and Butt-head would make. Whereas so many shooters these days revolve around stealth and gadgets, "Bulletstorm" is a product of the "Doom"/"Serious Sam" school of shooters, where the best defense -- aw, hell, there's no defense, it's all offense.
The game has uniformly entertaining weapons -- just wait till you get your hands on what's effectively an explosive straitjacket launcher -- and even the more conventional weapons have hilarious secondary modes, like a blast from your machine gun that uses up 100 bullets.

The game's main gimmick, though, is a giant electric "whip" you can use to fling enemies and other objects around. The game rewards you for using the whip in new ways, and it's a blast to pull people out of helicopters, for instance, or toss an explosive barrel at enemies and shoot it in midair. The only downside is that it can be hard to find ammo, as enemies' bodies end up flung in some corner of thrown off a cliff.
Much of the credit for this fun-first approach belongs to "Gears of War" mastermind Cliff Bleszinski. He may look like just another skateboarder Doing the Dew, but in fact Bleszinski is a discriminating guy, taking a stand against elements that have undeservedly become standard in the first-person shooter world, like the eternally respawning enemies that sap the consequence from "Call of Duty" and its clones.
His team's one mistake, perhaps, was giving you a partner. The second character allows for banter generously strewn with that rare thing, the joke that's both unprintable and actually funny, but, like in "Resident Evil 5," having someone else taking out bad guys reduces your sense of ownership over the proceedings.
