Questions have been asked about the absence of Joe Cole and Tottenham’s in-form midfielders Aaron Lennon and Tom Huddlestone, but rather than individuals, it’s the strategy of Capello’s selection which needs to be closer scrutinised.
But Upson and Wright-Phillps are back. They both played their hearts out at the World Cup and unlike most of their teammates they performed to the best of their ability, but why would Capello drop them for one squad and then bring them straight back?
So how did the new England line up against Hungary? Theo Walcott (who played in the qualifiers but was deemed not good enough to go to the World Cup) returned, Adam Johnson was tried out as a new left winger, Phil Jagielka filled in for the injured Rio Ferdinand and Joe Hart, who had been the best English goalkeeper in the last 12 months anyway,christian louboutin, started between the sticks.

Capello justified his changes with the selection of Arsenal youngsters Kieran Gibbs and Jack Wilshire. Despite Gibbs’ talent and potential, he plays in the one position which England already have reliably covered, and while 18-year-old Wilshire may certainly be a star of the future,cheap Christian Louboutin shoes, he hasn’t even played regular first-team football.
They haven’t got any younger. Upson is playing in a West Ham defence which has conceded three goals in each of their first three league games and Wright-Phillips hasn’t featured in the league for Manchester City since being substituted on the opening day of the season. So it certainly isn’t form.

We know David Beckham isn’t going to be there because Capello revealed he was too old, so at least there is one consistent theme we can expect to see – youth.
