World Health Organization History of the Committee The World Health Organization, or WHO, is among the original agencies still active from the first inception of the United Nations. It was officially established under its present name and constitution on 7 April 1948. It was preceded by the League of Nations Health Organization in overseeing global efforts for the protection of health and prevention of disease, and has maintained a similarly broad focus throughout its existence. As stated in its Constitution, a global consideration for health and related issues is happiness, harmonious relations and security of all peoples. of health issues. The actions of WHO are carried out by two entities, the World Health Agency and the WHO Executive Board. WHO is governed by the Health Agency, which is its central decision-making body. It is comprised of appointed delegations from the WHO member states. The Health Agency is also in charge of WHO's budget and appoints the Director-General. The WHO Executive Board is in charge of carrying out and overseeing programming and policy decisions made by the Health Agency. Thirty-four members with advanced health qualifications are appointed to serve on the Executive Board. The efforts of WHO are funded both through the contributions of member states and, more significantly, by large grants from private entities, such as non-governmental organizations (NGOs), individually-supported foundations like the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and donations from private interests such as pharmaceutical corporations and vaccine developers. According to the most recent financial report from May 2009, these non-member-state provided funds now exceed the funding for the organization's programming from public sources. The policy decisions made by the World Health Organization typically fall under one of two categories, in line with its constitutional mission: those relating to active health crises, such as disease outbreaks, and those relating to health issues, such as nutrition and health education. In both cases, these actions tend to take the form of suggestions, informational frameworks, and emergency distribution of necessary supplies, medications, and personnel. For example, WHO currently maintains the Global Network for Pandemic Information, GORAN, a linkage of over a hundred existing health information networks. This network was integral in identifying and addressing the SARS outbreak in 2002. WHO also has worked to educate the public about nutrition by standardizing the ideal recommendations for intake of vitamins and minerals, as well as maximum recommendations for sugar and sodium, in the global diet. And, through the the case of nutritional standards, the sugar lobby was upset by insinuations that their product was harmful and sought to undermine the research behind WHO's spread of HIV-AIDs and other ######ually transmitted infections, the Vatican, which has stood firmly against birth control, issued a statement in response claiming that condoms could not in fact provide a barrier to disease particles, calling them an only promote ######ual promiscuity. Thus, in seeking to promote health and wellness in a truly global manner in future, the World Health Organization has an additional task: to be observant not only of national sovereignty, but also of cultural, social, and religious diversity and the possible conflicts of interest between public and private entities. more Atlas Atlas entry Open Category: Health, Organization, International, United Nations agencies to improve my
