CHICAGO — In about 10 days, Derek Jeter is expected to return from the disabled list, at which point Eduardo Nunez will again assume his role of dutiful understudy. This, he knows, is not some Wally Pipp situation. “We’ll go back to the same way,” Nunez said with a laugh.
His way has been paved in gold and littered with potholes, with signs reading,
Boston Red Sox Hats, “Beware: Learning Curve,
cheap Minnesota Twins Hats,” around every turn. In five games at shortstop since Jeter strained his right calf muscle, Nunez is batting .389 (7 for 18) with 2 steals,
New Era Jordan Hats Sale, a home run and 3 runs batted in. He has also committed two fielding errors and, on Saturday, canceled a stolen base by Russell Martin when his bat hit Cubs catcher Geovany Soto on the backswing.
In the sixth inning Saturday with the Yankees leading by a run,
Cheap Famous Hats, Nunez muffed a potential double-play grounder, a mistake offset by Brett Gardner and Russell Martin’s catch-and-tag double play at the plate. But Nunez said he was improving at not letting his defensive struggles affect his offense, which is something he said he initially had trouble separating, crediting Jeter with helping him learn. In the eighth, Nunez laid down a sacrifice bunt, and in the ninth he doubled home Robinson Cano with what proved the winning run in the Yankees’ 4-3 victory.
“Keep working hard,” Nunez said. “Just think about that.”
It is all part of the process, the Yankees believe, and one they are eager to see through. Nunez’s work ethic has impressed them as much as his energy, and they will figure out how to get him at-bats after Jeter comes back. Nunez said that he was gradually growing more comfortable, and that filling in for Jeter has been made easier by having been with the team all season. He said it might have been harder, the pressure greater,

“I think for a young player, your biggest fear is they try to do too much, and when you have some success, you can put that behind you,” Manager Joe Girardi said. “You don’t feel you have to prove you belong.”
Girardi tolerates physical errors much more than mental mistakes, calling them part of the game. Nunez has worked with the fielding instructor Mick Kelleher at improving his throwing technique and learning how to make throws from different arm angles. The Yankees consider Nunez part of their long-term plans, but reducing his error totals — he has committed eight (seven at shortstop) in only 17 games — is imperative.
“Yes,
Cheap More Brand Hats, they’re frustrating and you don’t want them to happen,” Girardi said. “But I don’t see him taking them to his offense and I don’t see him taking his offense to his defense. He’s just playing his game and that’s what we want.”
GIRARDI’S EARLY START Joe Girardi awoke at 5:30 a.m. Sunday to make a special 2-hour-10-minute drive down Interstate 55. For the first time in four years, Girardi was able to spend Father’s Day with his dad, Jerry, 80, who is in the advanced stages of Alzheimer’s disease and lives in a nursing home outside Peoria,
Fox Racing Hats, Ill. This series at Wrigley Field, where Girardi played in two stints with the Cubs, has brought back memories of his childhood,
New York Mets Hats sale, when his father would buy him Ron Santo pizzas. “Better than I expected after what I had heard,” Girardi said. “His eyes were open, he was moving, he ate well, so it was all good.”
STRONG OUTING FOR HUGHES Phil Hughes’s progression from right-shoulder inflammation continued Sunday, when,
HOT Styles Sale, according to multiple news reports,
Seattle Mariners Hats, his fastball topped out at 95 miles per hour and hovered around 92 to 93 in a start for Class A Staten Island. Hughes threw 41 of his 61 pitches for strikes, lasting four and one-third innings, and struck out seven while allowing one run and one walk. He will probably need at least three more starts in the minors before rejoining the rotation, and his performance is likely to influence the Yankees’ pursuit of starting pitching help before the July 31 trade deadline.
