John Froschauer/Associated Press Orioles closer George Sherrill has drawn interest from many teams.

We all know Roy Halladay is the most sought after player this trading deadline season. But there are plenty of other names being thrown around as the July 31 deadline approaches. Here’s the latest from around the major leagues.
A day after telling reporters that a trade involving ace Roy Halladay was “unlikely,” Toronto Blue Jays General Manager J.P. Ricciardi sounded slightly more optimistic on Wednesday. According to ESPN’s Jayson Stark, Ricciardi said that he’s “getting really close to sitting down and telling teams, ‘This is what it’s going to take.’ I’d say going into Monday,
Baseball Hats, we’ll pretty much have our cards on the table.”
Ricciardi added: “No one has thrown players at us. They’re waiting for us to throw players at them.”
Stark reports that the Philadelphia Phillies are still the front-runners,

Montreal Expos Hats sale, Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago White Sox continue to be mentioned as possible destinations.
Besides Halladay, the Dodgers’ priority is the bullpen. The Los Angeles Times has reported that the team wants to add a pitcher who can help set up closer Jonathon Broxton. Baltimore closer George Sherrill is on a list of potential targets that include Pittsburgh Pirates closer Matt Capps and the Cincinnati Reds’ Francisco Cordero, David Weathers and Arthur Rhodes.
Two names that have come up a lot in trade rumors are the former Cy Young Award winner Cliff Lee, a possible Plan B for those seeking Halladay, and catcher and first baseman Victor Martinez. If the Cleveland Indians decide that it’s officially time to go into rebuilding mode, then a trade would be more likely. SI.com’s Jon Heyman recently reported that the Indians “appear to be more seriously considering the possibility” of dealing Lee.
Lee is not pitching at the exact same level as he was during last season’s Cy Young campaign,
Cheap Scarves, but he’s still been extremely effective. He has a 3.17 E.R.A. and has pitched three complete games this season.
The Chicago Cubs seem to be focusing on bolstering their bullpen, according to The Chicago Sun-Times. Sherrill is believed to be on their radar, but General Manager Jim Hendry wouldn’t go into specifics about what he’s looking for.
”If something comes up that we think makes us better,
Minnesota Twins Hats, we’ll try to do something,” Hendry said.
Chicago’s other team is interested in landing a starting pitcher, according to The Sun-Times, but White Sox Manager Ozzie Guillen didn’t sound so sure before Tuesday night’s game.
“Right now we don’t have anything on the table,” Guillen told The Chicago Tribune. “I don’t expect anything to happen.”
A lot of teams, including the Dodgers, the Los Angeles Angels and the Florida Marlins, appear to be interested in Baltimore Orioles closer Sherrill. For what it’s worth, Sherrill wouldn’t mind staying put.
“For sure, I want to be here,
Toronto Blue Jays Hats sale, Sherrill said. “I’m an Oriole now for as long as it lasts. It would be a little disappointing to get traded, especially if this team does turn it around in the next couple of years.”
Entering Wednesday’s game against the Yankees,
2009 World Baseball Classic hats sale, Sherrill had 20 saves in 23 opportunities with a 2.35 E.R.A.
Meanwhile, MLB.com has outfielder Aubrey Huff and reliever Danys Baez on the block.
Arizona Diamondbacks closer Chad Qualls has drawn interest from a slew of teams, but a trade is unlikely, according to The Arizona Republic. Qualls won’t be a free agent until after the 2010 season.

My birthday is on the trade dealine. It seems like every year, there is one player (for example, Manny last year) on whom so much trade-speculative media attention is concentrated that when he is finally traded, my relief from the chatter is so palpable that I consider that trade MLB’s birthday present to me.
Please Mr. Ricciardi, give me my birthday present already!

If Victor Martinez is available, what are the Mets waiting for? He’s the best offensive catcher in the game who isn’t named Mauer and the Mets need a productive catcher even once Beltran, Reyes and company return from the DL. The Mets could send Cleveland a package that might include John Maine and a few of their better- um- “prospects.”
