Market fairs, known as talard nat in Thai, have flourished in every corner of the capital from a soi on Silom Road right next to high-rise buildings in the heart of Bangkok, to places further afield in the Ramkhamhaeng and Chaeng Watthana areas.
Regardless of location, the market fairs have a similar look to temporary shops offering everything from clothes, T-shirts and accessories to food and even mobile phone handsets, electric home appliances and DVDs.
They attract teenagers and young office workers in particular who know that spending money at high-end department stores is simply beyond their financial reach.
"We middle-class people better save the rest of our money for the unavoidable costs of living such as kids' tuition fees, fuel, food and electricity bills," said Piruntanee Panichpat, a 36-year-old office worker,
