Tottenham’s Champions League adventure is all but over after losing 4-0 in the Bernabeu in the first leg of their quarter final against Real Madrid, with Los Blancos completely dominating the fixture.
Spurs were dealt a blow before kick off as winger Aaron Lennon was removed from the starting line-up with a sore throat and replaced by Jermaine Jenas.
From the first whistle the home side looked to attack, whilst Spurs looked nervy and it took just four minutes for the Spanish side to take the lead. Ex Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor rose above Jenas to head in a corner, which Heurelho Gomes and Luka Modric on the line could not clear.
The task for Tottenham got more difficult on 14 minutes when lone striker Peter Crouch was sent off for a second bookable offence, as he slid in to try and block a Marcelo clearance. Tottenham’s only chances of the game came soon after as Rafael van der Vaart was on the end of a long Gareth Bale throw, but the Dutchman could not get a shot away as he was crowded out by Ricardo Carvalho. Soon after Bale made a run behind Sergio Ramis and chested a long ball down onto his left foot, but the Welshman could only hit the side netting from six yards.
Adebayor almost doubled Madrid’s lead but he failed to connect with a Ramos headed centre with the goal at his mercy, and the game went into the break 1-0 to the home side.
Harry Redknapp replaced van der Vaart with Jermain Defoe at half time, but Spurs were to be pinned back for the full second 45 minutes in what became a very one-sided affair. Adebayor got the important second goal as Spurs switched off from a short corner and the ball in found the Togolese striker in space, who headed past Gomes.
Tottenham looked like they did not want to play the game and Angel di Maria added a spectacular third on 72 minutes, cutting in from the right and powering an unstoppable effort into the away team’s top corner. Ronaldo was starting to showboat and the Spanish side had long periods of possession, with Tottenham unable to muster anything even closely resembling an attack. Kaka and Gonzalo Higuain came off the bench to show Madrid’s strength in depth, and it was the Brazilian who crossed for Ronaldo to get the fourth a couple of minutes from the end,

Harry Redknapp’s men will need to bounce back quickly and focus on league fixtures if they are to finish the season strongly, but on the night they were totally outplayed by the star studded Madrid side.
