GALESBURG ―
Walking into the Candle-lighting Ball is like being sent back to a simpler time. There are women in ball gowns complete with hoop skirts and stockings. Some wore light colored feathers on their hats while others donned bonnets. Here and there were a Civil War general or Benjamin Franklin.
This year, the Galesburg Area Chamber of Commerce and Heritage Days Living History Association collaborated to celebrate the 175th anniversary of Galesburg’s founding.
“This celebrates two very important events. The 175th year of the founding of Galesburg and the first year of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War

Many of the people in attendance are familiar with this time period and have made their own clothing.
”I have been going to reenactments for years,” said Karen Taylor.
Although there were a few newcomers to this event “I’ve just never had a chance to make it but I’m interested in Civil War-type things,” said Terry Huff.
The real event is the clothing. Faces glow when discussing the detail of how each garment was made by hand.
Elaine Masicale, a member of the band, The Bog Oak Harmonians

“I don’t have to wear all the appropriate clothing but I would know if I didn’t and I wouldn’t feel like my 19th century person

“It’s a community,” she said. “I’m Facebook friends with some people here and we bounce ideas off each other.”
The community aspect was a large part of the gathering during the 19th century. Masicale

This event also serves to bring two groups together that have rarely interacted on Heritage Days, those who are participants in the outdoor Civil War re-enactments and those who participate in the rendezvous.
“The stars aligned this year

While it is uncertain if this event will be held next year

The event also serves as a fundraiser for Heritage Days events in August.
Many feel that this acknowledgement of history is important today. “People should know where their ancestors came from and know how we got this way
