The Norwegian Nobel Committee says six countries have declined invitations to attend the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony next month for jailed Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo.

China’s government has tried to organize a boycott of the Nobel ceremony,newalk birkenstock, warning countries they will “bear the consequences” if they attend. Most Western countries plan to attend.
Liu’s wife has been confined to her home since the award was announced last month.
That would be a first in the 109-year history of the Nobel Peace Prize. Three previous winners were unable to go to Oslo but were able to send representatives.

Lundestad has said the ceremony will proceed, but Liu’s medal, diploma and $1.4 million award will not be handed out if no one close to Liu is present to accept it.
Liu is serving an 11-year prison sentence for co-authoring a tract in support of democratic rights in China. Lundestad has said it is unlikely Liu’s relatives will be allowed to travel from China to Oslo for the award ceremony.
