Executive Summary

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) solicits Research Education (R25) grant applications from applicant organizations that propose to develop a focus course in auditory and vestibular biology.
Purpose. This FOA will use the NIH Research Education (R25) grant mechanism to fund a new educational course dedicated to the auditory and vestibular biological sciences.  The course should cover the wide breadth of fundamental auditory/vestibular biology in a combined lecture and hands-on format.   Mechanism of Support. This FOA will use the NIH Research Education (R25) grant mechanism. The NIDCD intends to commit approximately $250,000 total costs to this program in FY 2007 to fund one new grant in response to this RFA. Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications. Budget and Project Period.  The total project period for an application submitted in response to this funding opportunity may not exceed one year. Total costs may not exceed $250,000. Section I. Funding Opportunity Description

1. Research Objectives

The Nationwide Institute on Deafness and also other Communication Problems (NIDCD) ( invites R25 applications for the development of a two- week special topics course in the auditory and vestibular sciences. The NIH Research Education (R25) grant mechanism is a flexible and specialized mechanism designed to foster the development of biomedical, behavioral, and clinical researchers through creative and innovative research education programs.  The purpose of this initiative is to develop a specialized topics course that provides informational and hands-on research exposure to the auditory and vestibular sciences.  The target audience envisioned for this course would consist of advanced graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and established research investigators.

The exquisite and complex processes involved in auditory and vestibular biology provide hearing and balance function.  Interruption of these processes may occur from a variety of factors, including genetic, environmental, and pathogenic causative agents, and can result in a loss of hearing and balance function.  While loss is most often not life threatening, the quality of life disruption is substantial.  It is the intent of this newly developed course to continue to strengthen the biomedical research investigator pipeline to advance the understanding of hearing/balance function, and treatment of hearing and balance function ailments.

Bridging all aspects of molecular, cellular,Tiffany Juwelier, physiological biology, and genetics, the new developed course curriculum should provide a comprehensive exposure to the auditory and vestibular sciences.  Additionally, the course organization should have ample lecture, laboratory space and facilities, to accommodate hands-on elements of methodologies and technologies being performed in current auditory and vestibular research laboratories.  It is anticipated that future established courses would be offered as an every other year rotation, and that the course would be approximately two weeks in duration.

The proposed research education program may complement other, ongoing research training and education occurring at the applicant institution, but the proposed educational experiences must be distinct from those research training and research education programs currently receiving federal support. The R25 is not a substitute for an institutional research training program (T32) and can not be used to circumvent or supplement Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) mechanisms.

Section II. Award Information

1. Mechanism of Support

This FOA will use the NIH Research Education Grant (R25) award mechanism. As an applicant, you will be solely responsible for planning,New Tiffany, directing, and executing the proposed project.

This FOA uses just-in-time concepts. It also uses the non-modular budget format.  Applicants must complete and submit budget requests using the SF424 Research and Related (R&R) Budget Component found in the application package for this FOA. 

Research education grant support for this RFA are for new projects only; competing renewal (formerly “competing continuation”) applications will not be accepted. 

2. Funds Available

Because the nature and scope of the proposed research education program will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size of each award will also vary. Although the financial plans of the NIDCD provide support for this program, awards pursuant to this funding opportunity are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications.

The total project period for an application submitted in response to this funding opportunity may not exceed one year. Although the size of award may vary with the scope of the research education program proposed, it is expected that applications will stay within the following budgetary guidelines: total costs should not exceed $250,000.

NIH grants policies as described in the NIH Grants Policy Statement will apply to the applications submitted and awards made in response to this funding opportunity announcement. 

Facilities and Administrative (F&A) costs requested by consortium participants, if applicable, are not included in the direct cost limitation.  See NOT-OD-05-004.

All awards are subject to the availability of funds. The estimated amount of funds available for support of projects awarded as a result of this announcement is $250,000 for fiscal year 2007.
