Burlesque Costume Features
So you've seen some fabulous burlesque costumes out there and you want to make one for yourself that's a bit different, whether for an act or a club night. You can of course buy a great range of ready made costumes but if you are a regular burlesque dresser you may want to buy some individual pieces and make up different costumes each time.
The main piece you'll need for any burlesque costume is a good corset. A corset helps define and slim the waist and makes the most of your breasts and cleavage. For more information on choosing a corset see my article called Burlesque Corsets.
The next thing you'll need is a bustle skirt
corset dressus, a frilled skirt or a pair of satin tanga shorts or even ruffled knickers, depending on how daring you feel. If you don't want to show too much leg
corset tops, a long velvet or satin skirt with a fish tail cut or a large bow or bustle will also be a great match with your corset.
Fishnet stockings or tights or black or red stockings with garters are the next items you'll need. There are so many fabulous choices of stockings and garters out there so even if you go for the same skirt every time you dress in burlesque
corset tops, you can change the look of the outfit considerably by changing the stockings. Match red stockings with a red feather boa for the saloon girl look for example. You could also wear the same corset and skirt with stripy over the knee socks and a bow tie for the mime artist look. Or how about wearing a fitted dinner jacket over the corset with fishnet tights and no skirt.
Lace, feathers, ruffles and frills in the form of boas, fascinators or other hairpieces, sleeves, garters
babydoll lingerie, shoe bows, fans, masks or any other accessory you can think of will complete the outfit. These can be daring, surprising and outright showstoppers. If you can carry it off you can even wear a bowl of fruit on your head! With burlesque anything goes as long as it's ######y and could be part of an act. Masks and fans are great party pieces and if you can master the knack of snapping the fan and hiding your face or using it to get attention then all the better.
And then of course there's the make-up. Add glitter and pizazz, don't skimp on colour and sparkle. Or for a different look go for pale and interesting but add stick on sparkle decorations on your cheeks. And of course you'll need a good, bold, red lipstick.
Once you have a corset and a skirt you have the basics of your burlesque outfit then each time simply add stockings and accessories to change the look for your outfit. This is a great way of building up your burlesque wardrobe and varying your look without spending a fortune each time.
