Have I been living in some dark hole? Some time warp where the rest of the world passes me by and I stay static? Oh yes, I have actually, its called my boring job in a basement. Time passes differently when you have no windows. Though I still find it hard to believe that Spinnerette’s full length album got released in June and I heard nary a word of it. There is something seriously messed up with the music universe, when a band like Spinnerette’s album drops and there isnt even a whisper on Itunes or facebook or anything about it. But then I probably don’t need to tell you that in a world where Miley Cyrus is the number one music download, that things are seriously fracked up.
Come on people, Spinnerette the new super group fronted by none other then Brody Dalle (formerly Brody Armstrong) of The Distiller’s fame and including alumni from various other bands such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, Queens of the Stone Age (a band that happens to be fronted by Brody’s husband), Eleven, Pearl Jam, and a bonus Distillers alumni.
Spinnerette has been this whisper of a project for some time now. After The Distillers went their separate ways and punk music suffered a great loss, Brody seemed to fall off the music radar for a short time until she hooked up with Josh Homme front man of the Queens of the Stone Age and did a string of appearances on Homme and friend’s projects. She then became possibly the coolest rock mom on the block when she gave birth to her and Homme’s daughter. Then rumors of Spinnerette started, mere teasers… I waited… and then forgot all about Spinnerette until I stumbled across the Ghetto Love Ep. Spinnerette was real!
And now there is more then a four song EP to prove it.
This new project marks the musical growth of Dalle. A blending of sounds with more complex musical arrangements. Spinnerette allows Dalle to show more of her vocal range, yes its still the same gravelly voice in there but I think its easy to forget that she can do more then shout above loud guitars,hogan, and Spinnerette proves why Dalle is a front woman to be reckoned with. There is also a more electronic feel to some of the songs. But do not be alarmed there is enough Distiller pumping through the veins of this band that true fans will still be pleased. IF,tod's homme, they actually give it a chance.
For artist like Brody Dalle there is always the damned if you do damned if you don’t rule. If she doesn’t do anything people will think she sold out for domesticity, but anything she does do people will criticize just because it isnt The Distillers. Spinnerette arn’t as punk as The Distillers. They don’t have the same sound. Brody is no longer sporting liberty spikes. Purists even criticized The Distillers for doing the mega tour with No Doubt and Garbage back in the day (a concert one of my best friends got to go to and I didnt. Yes, he should still be sleeping with one eye open for that one). But The Distillers are no longer together. My music tastes have changed drastically since high school, but that doesn’t mean I don’t still slip in my Garbage cds in from time to time and think wow this is still amazing music. I loved The Distillers, but some of their songs were not my cup of tea. We all have those albums where we skip over some songs constantly in order to get to our favorites. I feel the best thing about the Distillers has been preserved in Spinnerette and that is their common denominator Brody Dalle. Her voice, the writing, all great things alive and well.
