Americans have around 400% increase of antidepressant use
It appears the prescribing of antidepressant medications has seen a sharp increase since 1988. According to new report from the Center’s of Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics, more than one in 10 Americans over the age of 12 years now takes antidepressants however, in a confusing twist the study also had found that two-thirds of those with severe depression symptoms do not take any antidepressants.
This new report reflects 11% of Americans over age 12 take an antidepressant with 14% being on the medication for more than ten years.
This new research was led by Dr. Laura Pratt,
moncler, PhD,
ralph lauren pas cher, epidemiologist for the CDC. The study was based on responses from around 12,000 people who had participated in the 2005 to 2008 annual health survey.
In the study it was also found that women were 2 ½ times more likely to take antidepressants than their male counterparts. Among women 23% ages 40 to 59 had taken antidepressants more than any age or ###### group. Among men and women it was also found people aged forty and older were more apt to take antidepressants than younger people.
Less than one-half of the 14% of people who were taking more than one antidepressant had seen a mental health practitioner within the last year.
Researchers determined that there difference in antidepressant use by income.
It is noted that while a majority of antidepressants are used to treat depression they also can be used to treat anxiety. Concerning that area it was determined that around 8% of those aged 12 and over on antidepressants has shown no current symptoms of depression.
Researchers speculate there could be two reasons for this; that those in this group taking the medications for conditions other than depression or the medications are working and therefore there are no symptoms of currently having depression.
The American Psychiatric Association guidelines indicate the preferred treatment for moderate to severe depression is medication.
The most disturbing finding in the report is that those who take antidepressants are taking them on a long term basis. Depression can be a chronic disorder and research has demonstrated that treatment of antidepressants decreases the risk for relapse by fifty percent. The negative side to this is the majority of medications have little research concerning the long term effects. This clearly establishes a need for that type of study.
