To be honest, Peter was pushing against an open door. I spent two years of my early career on the Spiritualist newspaper Psychic News and saw enough strange events to convince me there’s more in Heaven and Earth than dreamed of in my philosophy. And the good news is that you don’t necessarily have to wait until Halloween to have an encounter with the spirit world.
Among the other ghosts are Tom Skelton – the original Tom Fool – who as the 16th century jester played many cruel pranks including directing travellers across the nearby quicksands. Then there’s the Muncaster Boggle – Mary Bragg – found dead beside the road in 1862 and still seen by motorists today as a ‘white lady’.

For 800 years it has been the home to the Pennington family – and as long as they don’t break the glass bowl given to them by Henry VI – they could be there for another 800 years. *
* The bowl is known as The Luck of Muncaster and was given to the Penningtons by the King after he sought shelter there one night after the Battle of Hexham in 1464. The King foretold the family would prosper as long as the Luck remained intact. There are a number of Lucks in Cumbria and if you doubt the power of the supernatural, just take a look at Workington Hall which lost its Luck some years ago. It is now in ruins.

Muncaster has ‘real’ ghosts. None of these vague legends handed down for generations but contemporary accounts, signed and witnessed. So lively are these ghosts that they have even attracted the attention of scientist Dr Jason Braithwaite who is carrying out a long-term investigation into the hauntings. He favours a more mind-based explanation for the phenomena but a figure of a white lady or raps in an empty room are scary stuff whatever the explanation. So it’s not too surprising that the castle’s ghosts tours and its remain very popular. With Halloween just around the corner, I was invited on a tour of the castle by Peter Frost-Pennington. He spoke with sincerity about the many witnesses who had reported strange phenomena in the castle: none so strange as the sound of a sobbing child in the Tapestry Room. The sobs have been heard by a visitor as recently as November 2007. The child is believed by Peter to be Margaret Pennington who died aged 11 in 1871. She died of ‘screaming fits’.

One guest, staying a few nights in the Tapestry Room, told the family one morning that he could no longer stay there. The family asked if it was the sobbing child scaring him off? “I don’t mind the child” he replied “but it gets too much when the ghost of the nurse starts singing to her as well”!
