Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander said today he’s still dealing with the effects of food poisoning, but he anticipates making his next start Wednesday against the Baltimore Orioles.
“It’s weird,” Verlander said. “I talked to the doctor today; I feel good in the morning and then, by nighttime, my stomach’s in knots. “I did some research on it. I really don’t think it’s the illness everybody’s got. It’s too much of a coincidence for me.” Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Monday a handful of players threw up before or during his team’s series-opening 5-1 loss to Orioles. First baseman Miguel Cabrera and closer Jose Valverde were among those suffering from the bug, and neither was seen at the team’s optional workout today. Justin Verlander said he and nine friends went to dinner at Tao in New York after his first start of the season Thursday. Verlander and one of his dining companions had the same dish -- “a peanut-type sauce that came with some chicken” -- and both got sick the next morning.
“I felt better the next day, but same sort of thing” where I felt worse at night, Verlander said. “I think my stomach’s just not doing right after going through that trauma.”(Mlb Jerseys ) Leyland did not address reporters today but said Monday he encouraged his sick players “to get rest and get fluids in them, and if they don’t feel very good (Tuesday), just stay in bed. Don’t try to come out here unless you need a trainer, unless you need some medical attention.”
