Aquarium Merchandise Salifert Additives Trace Challenging & Trace Soft
Trace elements are elements that are present in natural seawater in a concentration lower than approx. 1 mg/L or ppm. Some of these elements are essential to make many biological processes possible:
Manganese is essential for photosynthesis and many biochemical reactions associated with it.
Iron is required by some organisms to absorb essential nutrients.
Cobalt is essential for the formation of several coral pigments.
Zinc, like manganese, is essential for photosynthesis and also for the formation of calcium carbonate by corals.
Salifert's research has shown that some trace elements are depleted very fast (e.g. Manganese) while some are depleted very slowly. An example of a trace element that hardly depletes is molybdenum. Despite this, many trace element supplements contain significant amounts of molybdenum. This results in far too high molybdenum concentration which stimulates undesirable cyanobacteria growth. Salifert's supplements do not contain molybdenum.
Although every aquarium is different, Salifert has succeeded in designing trace element supplements which add sufficient trace elements to make corals thrive, yet avoid overdosing. The largest difference between trace element usage is between hard corals and soft/leather corals and coralline algae. We have therefore designed two different supplements:-
Trace Challenging - a trace element mix for hard corals.
Trace Soft - a trace element mix for soft/leather corals and coralline algae.
Both can be combined according to the approximate ratio of the aquarium inhabitants. In this way, a very close to perfect formulation of trace elements for different aquariums is possible.Since addition of iodine is impossible without degrading this supplement, all forms of iodine are omitted. Salifert's Natural Iodine is recommended to complete the full variety of trace elements.
All in One
All in One makes the use of the so-called A and B calcium and alkalinity supplements unnecessary. It contains almost everything required for growth by corals and the beautiful encrusting pink and red coralline algae. All in One will increase the alkalinity (carbonate hardness), calcium, strontium, trace elements (except iodine) and amino acids concentrations.
Calcium, strontium, carbonate (alkalinity)and amino acids are the major constituents of calcareous algae, the skeletal material of difficult corals and the skeletal needles of soft/leather corals. Growth and multiplication of these organisms means depletion of those substances. Trace elements are also very important as explained above.
Salifert's All in One supplement is highly concentrated and contains approx. 35000 ppm calcium, corresponding amounts of biologically-activated bicarbonate and 700 ppm strontium. The calcium is acetate based and, unlike gluconate-based merchandise, is converted within minutes to calcium bicarbonate. Occasionally an additional boost of alkalinity with Salifert's KH+pH buffer is recommended to compensate for alkalinity lost by, for example, decaying food. Iodine should also be supplemented for the best result.

A too low magnesium concentration (below 1300 mg/l) results in problems maintaining correct calcium and alkalinity levels. Correct alkalinity and calcium levels are beneficial for coral growth.
Magnesium Powder from Salifert is highly concentrated and will not only increase the magnesium concentration but will also correct the ionic imbalance. Once the magnesium concentration is between approx 1300 and 1500 mg/L use Salifert's Liquid Magnesium supplement to maintain the magnesium concentration.

A reduced phosphate concentration will allow corals and coralline algae to grow much faster and reduce the occurrence of some toxic heavy metals, silicate and organics which are difficult to remove by skimming or by using activated carbon.
Salifert's Phosphate Killer has a very high surface area on which phosphate can be adsorbed and the binding capacity of this product is substantially higher than other similar, iron-based goods currently on the market.
It binds phosphate more strongly than most other phosphate removing items (such as those using aluminium oxide) and does not leach toxic aluminium.
Code Product Size 6040 Phosphate Killer 250ml 6041 Phosphate Killer 1000ml KH + pH Buffer
Salifert's KH + pH Buffer is a highly concentrated, fast dissolving powder which increases alkalinity (carbonate hardness) and stabilizes the pH at the correct value.
By doing this, it contributes significantly to the health of all aquarium inhabitants including corals, coralline algae and fish.
To keep corals and encrusting algae in good health an alkalinity of approx. 3.2 meq/L or 9 dKH (expressed in German carbonate hardness value) should be maintained.
The Salifert KH/Alk Profi-Test allows you to measure in 0.1 meq/L increments.
This supplement contains carbonate and bicarbonates. It does not contain boron since the depletion is different in different tanks and is not linked to alkalinity or carbonate hardness depletion.

Corals require iodine as a de-toxifier, as a protection against uv-radiation and as a natural defence against many parasites.
Iodine is present in Natural Sea Water (NSW) in a very low concentration (0.06 mg/l or 0.06 ppm) and occurs as iodide, iodate, molecular iodine and hypoiodite.
Generally when we say iodine we mean one or more iodine species without a clear distinction being made. NSW contains predominantly iodate and, to a lesser extent, iodide. There is, however, a misconception amongst many hobbyists that iodide predominates in NSW. Research by Salifert and a number of universities has proved this to be untrue, and has shown that it is predominantly iodate which appears in NSW and this is used by algae (photo synthetic corals have a symbiotic relationship with zooxanthellae which are, in fact, algae).
Salifert's Natural Iodine supplement contains iodate and also some iodide in similar proportions found in NSW. Both are present as their calcium and magnesium salts because Salifert's research has shown that iodate is complexed with calcium and magnesium in NSW. Another advantage of using these salts is that, unlike when potassium or sodium salts are used, no ionic imbalance is created.
Salifert stands alone in offering such an advanced, reliable and well thought-out formulation.

Strontium is important for accelerating coral and calcareous algae growth. Salifert's Natural Strontium supplement is an easy to use formulation designed to avoid a too low or too high strontium concentration.
Natural Sea Water (NSW) contains approx. 7-9 mg/l strontium. This strontium is associated ("chelated") with sulphate. Since the growth of corals and calcareous algae goes hand in hand with strontium and calcium depletion, depletion of calcium (which is very easily measurable) usually means depletion of strontium as well. Initial strontium concentration can easily be maintained by dosing the same amount as our Coral Calcium supplement. This reduces the need for a strontium measurement.
Salifert's Natural Strontium supplement contains predominantly strontium sulphate, together with some other ingredients,
Microsoft Office 2007 Key, to avoid an ionic imbalance. This sulfate form is significantly more effective and less toxic than the commonly used strontium chloride and is the form in which it is present in natural sea water.
The use of Coral Calcium as a calcium supplement is highly advised. In fact, for best results, Natural Strontium and Coral Calcium are designed to be used together.

Boron is present in Natural Sea Water (NSW) in a moderately low concentration (4.4 4.8 mg/L or ppm). It is present predominantly as boric acid and to a lesser extent as borate.
Boron has several important biological functions and our results show that a too low boron concentration can slow down the growth of corals and coralline algae. Boron also has some positive effect in buffering NSW especially in the range of pH 8.1-8.3. In most aquariums, boron is depleted very slowly yet steadily and in some aquariums, boron is present in a very high concentration. This is due to use of bad quality salt or impure supplements.
Salifert's Reef Boron does not contain the toxic boric acid compound (see above) but is, within 24 hours, gradually converted predominantly into the desired boric acid. This procedure has advantages since, when added to the aquarium, a locally high concentration will be present until evenly mixed throughout the whole aquarium. If it were present as boric acid then some slight, but temporary,
Windows 7 Download, toxic effect could take place. This danger is prevented with Reef Boron and Salifert is the only company presently offering such an essential additive.
Other elements such as strontium and many trace elements have a similar effect as boron, such as accelerating coral growth and allowing many biological processes to take place. These elements can easily be supplemented with our Natural Strontium, Trace Soft and Trace Challenging supplements.

Magnesium is present in Natural Sea Water (NSW) in a fairly high concentration (1350-1500 mg/L). Magnesium is an essential part of chlorophyll, which is necessary for photosynthesis. Without photosynthesis algae, and hence the corals,
Microsoft Office 2007 Key, which we have in our aquariums would not survive.
Magnesium also has another important function in that it allows the correct combination of calcium and alkalinity (or carbonate hardness) to be maintained. Maintaining a correct magnesium concentration is therefore very important and is indirectly responsible for fast coral and calcareous algae growth.
Magnesium is depleted by algae growth and also by the use of excessive kalkwasser or by going far beyond natural calcium, alkalinity and pH values.
Salifert's Liquid Magnesium is highly concentrated with each litre containing approx. 25000 mg of magnesium. To avoid an ionic imbalance, the magnesium in the supplement is balanced with ions such as sulfate, chloride,
Microsoft Office 2007 Key, bromide, sodium and calcium.

Coral Grower contains calcium, strontium and the trace elements (except iodine) required for growth and multiplication by corals and the beautiful encrusting pink and red coralline algae.
The trace elements included in Coral Grower allow organisms to carry out many biological processes. For example:-
Manganese is essential for the many bio-chemical reactions which make photosynthesis possible.
Iron allows several organisms to absorb nutrients.
Cobalt is essential for the formation of several coral pigments.
Zinc, like manganese, is essential for photosynthesis and is also used in the formation of calcium carbonate by corals.

Quite often too low a calcium concentration retards the growth of corals and calcareous algae. Natural seawater contains 420-450 mg/L calcium and this is also the value we should strive for in a stable aquarium where the fluctuation in calcium content should not be more than approximately 15 mg/L.
The addition of Coral Calcium immediately makes 100% calcium available to your corals and other calcium-requiring organisms.
If calcium is depleted because of the growth of corals and coralline algae then supplements such as Salifert's KH+pH Buffer and Strontium are also required. Since, together with calcium,
Microsoft Office 2007 Enterprise, they form the major ingredients of shells, coralline algae and the skeletal material of corals.

The skeletal material of corals is built-up with alternating layers of calcium carbonate and layers rich in amino acids. These amino acids fulfil many important functions:-
They stabilize the skeletal material and stop it changing into a totally different crystal structure
They decrease the negative effect of phosphate on coral growth.
They serve as a food for most corals and beneficial bacteria.
There is evidence that around coral reefs desirable amino acids occur in the water itself and are deposited on freshly formed calcium carbonate. The type of amino acids in solution, and their relative proportions, show a remarkable similarity to the amino acids found in coral skeletons. Therefore it is very likely that corals obtain these amino acids from the surrounding waters. These amino acids originate from the many different life forms on coral reefs and an aquarium system lacking the bio-diversity of a huge reef may lack the proper amino acids.
Salifert's Coralline Amino Acids contain all the amino acids in the correct proportions found in coral skeletons without those that have a negative effect on the stability and growth of the coral skeleton.
Coralline Amino Acids give corals the opportunity to form a stable skeleton or skeletal needles. The negative effects of phosphate are also markedly decreased.

Soft, difficult and leather corals require certain nutrients for growth and energy and these nutrients must contain fatty acids, vitamins, polymeric carbohydrates, proteins with a proper amino acid composition and some trace minerals bound to the proteins and carbohydrates. The energy these nutrients provide is used to carry out important biological processes necessary for the continued good health of the corals. Most corals are highly proficient in catching food particles, as long as the particle is within a certain size assortment and contains the nutrients they require. They can also obtain nutrients through their tissue. Such nutrients must meet several criteria otherwise they will not be transported through the tissue or will pollute the water heavily.
Some corals obtain some of their food from symbiotic algae but additional feeding on a regular basis with foods described above offers major improvements in coral health and growth.
Salifert's Coral Food contains all the nutrients required by corals in highly nutritional particles ranging in size from 5-150 microns, as well as dissolved natural polymeric and monomeric nutrients. When dosed according to the instructions corals will have sufficient food to thrive without polluting the water. The organic load caused by this supplement is comparable to what is found in pristine seawater. This food is also ideal for sponges, tunicates, feather duster worms and many other organisms. Coral Food replicates most of the food found in nature where corals thrive.
