Do you "work at home?" That sounded like a great idea when you started. You could get up whenever you wanted, take breaks whenever you wanted, wear anything you wanted. Sounds ideal to me!
Probably your "work at home" includes hours in front of the computer. Maybe you are blogging, writing e-books, or working on affiliate marketing. No matter, working at home is really difficult for many people.
Why is this so difficult? Distractions may make it difficult to focus on your work activity. A lack of a work schedule can make it difficult to really sit down and do the work. And believe it or not, many people are less productive when they do work from home in their PJ's.
Home is not the office. Home is filled with distractions. You can always find dishes to clean up, laundry to fold, children to tend to, meals to plan. It never ends but yet if you "work at home" you are somehow expected to be able to focus on that work.
So what is the secret? Several things come to mind. The first is that you must change your attitude and focus on the WORK part rather than the AT HOME part. Working at home means that you should be doing that - focusing on the work and getting it done.
Creating a daily schedule will help you to focus on working when it is time for working and doing all the other things when it is not time for working. You know, when you went to the office every day you had a schedule. You got up, showered and dressed, got the kids ready for school, paid attention to the hubby, maybe threw a load of clothes in the washer or started the dishwasher and then you were out the door. You had a schedule.
Your schedule sent you to work every day and while there you worked. You did not do laundry, or dishes, or pay bills, or anything else. (Well, you were not supposed to be doing other things!)
So create a schedule for working at home. Determine how many hours you need to accomplish what is expected and then schedule your day so that those things happen. Schedule breaks - do not just take them when you feel like it. So one of the great things about working at home is that you get to create your OWN schedule, not your boss's. But you do need that schedule.
The second thing that may help you is to create an environment where you ONLY work - well, at least 90% of the time there is working. If your office is for your work, but also the place where you take care of personal business, and also the place where guests sleep, and also the place where you keep the dog's crate, and also the place where your children play, and also the place where you iron - well,
Tous Wallets, I think you get the picture. Your office should be for work and all the other activities should take place somewhere else.
A third reason that people often fail when working from home is that they DO NOT get up and take that shower and get dressed so they are ready to meet their public. Of course, you do not need the suit and tie or office dress, but I contend that being dressed, wearing shoes, feeling like you look good will not only change your attitude but also your productivity. Try it - you may be surprised. It may help to keep a mirror where you can see yourself while you are working. This is especially true if you do a lot of phone work. Are you smiling? Do you look decent enough to meet this person in public if you needed to? Pay attention to this and I bet you will get lots more done in a day.
So to be more productive as a worker at home, set a schedule, create an office/working environment, and do pay attention to how you look. With these things in place, you should be a productive working at home.
