Louboutin’s love of unusual objects is well-documented. “I am traveling pretty much [nonstop], and I always buy objects, which is a bit of an addiction,” he said, emphasizing his words with sweeps of his hand. Sometimes he arranges for a container to be shipped home from his travels. “And it’s a bit of a complication, because you stop and say, ‘Now that I have a container, I should buy more.’ It’s stupid. You end up with 25 doors. I don’t need 25 doors.”

Christian Louboutin, the international fashion label, has built somewhat of an immunity to the lousy economy—one whose axe felled the French fashion house Christian Lacroix, which filed for bankruptcy in May. As with perfume and scarves, high-end shoes have been kicking up dust in the face of shoppers with shrinking bank accounts. But collaborating with other major brands has become, it seems, de rigueur. This week, christian heels, Jimmy Choo announced plans to follow in the footsteps of Matthew Williamson and Comme des Garçons by joining forces with Britain’sSweden's bankable high street retailer H&M. Louis Vuitton brought rapper Kanye West on board this year to design a line of sneakers. And aside from its partnership with Piper Heidsieck, Christian Louboutin teamed up with Mattel to celebrate Barbie’s 50th anniversary by making petite bubblegum-pink pumps. Christian Louboutin might have also gotten a bottom-line boost from shout-outs in popular culture, from hit songs (Ciara’s “High Price,” Keri Hilson’s “Knock You Down”) to reality shows such as The Real Housewives of Atlanta (during last night’s episode, one of the stars of the show, Kim, threatened to attack another, NeNe, with her crystal-encrusted Louboutin shoe).

Despite the recession, Louboutin does not necessarily view the business of selling expensive bottles of champagne and crystal drinking shoes as decadent. “To me, the word ‘decadent’ is so difficult to use; it’s a very sensitive word, in a way. For some people, this is decadent, boot christian louboutin,” said Louboutin, motioning to the room. Just above his head, hangs a portrait of an Elizabethan man in a neck ruff scowling blankly at a TV on the opposite wall. “For some people, cheap christian louboutin shoes sale, this is just big fun.”

Louboutin would leave the next day for Tokyo, before traveling on to Hong Kong, Singapore, and finally back home to Paris. He said he’s looking forward to finishing his apartment across from l’Opéra-Comique, and perhaps finding some time for rest. “In Paris, I really do like to try and do nothing … but that’s impossible.”
