As a young man I joined a martial arts class and I remember the strange looks I got from the sensei (the teacher) and the other members in the class when I asked if I could have a brown belt. It was a scene reminiscent from Oliver Twist: "Brown!!?"
He went on to explain that you can no more ask for a brown or black belt than you can just buy one. You need to earn it by learning the skills and disciplines and then putting them into practice. It has struck me many times since then that this is a useful analogy for success.
Many people buy books, tapes, CDs and DVDs with the intention of improving their lives. But like so many people who join their local gymnasium in January, nothing really happens. You see, you actually have to go to the gym to make it work - just joining and paying the money isn't going to get you any fitter or stronger. A book, CD or DVD has no value for you unless you read it, listen to it or watch it.

Much of success in any of its guises is about showing up. They say that showing up is 80%. Showing up on time takes it to 85%. Showing up on time with a plan is 90%. Turning up on time with a plan that you execute is 95%. The final 5% is yours if you turn up on time with a plan that you execute with excellence. In other words, it's all about the discipline of action.
