The girls started getting ready at noon. They slipped into their white and blue and sparkly dresses and had their hair curled. Representatives with Mary Kay cosmetics did their makeup as they sat patiently and waited for the big night.
The boys donned tuxedos they had picked out a few weeks earlier plus size prom dresse 2011, and the students climbed into the back of a stretch Hummer limo donated by Big John’s. The limo driver took them around the corner out onto “A” Street and parked along Illinois Avenue in front of Midland High School.
Their parents cheered as they climbed out in pairs and walked down the red carpet. Family members gathered around and snapped picture after picture. In their gowns and suits, they felt like rock stars with a slew of paparazzi.
For one night, those students who are a part of the Life Skills program got to feel special in their own right.
Raul Madrid said he was excited his son had the opportunity to participate in the second annual Life Skills student banquet and prom Saturday.
“Being with a disability, they don’t feel comfortable going to a regular prom or dances,” he said.
Madrid’s son Lorenzo, 16, has autism and mom Rosemary said he’s never been to a prom and is not sure her son knew what to expect.
But he was excited just like all of his fellow students, and Raul Madrid said that because of his son’s involvement in the Life Skills program, he’s seen the boy blossom and take part in social activities. Being able to take part in a prom in high school is one of those events that makes him feel good as a parent that his son has the opportunity.
There were 20 students suffering from mental and physical disabilities who participated in Saturday’s banquet.
It was a dream born into an idea last year when teacher Steve Derst said he started to encourage students to attend the Midland High prom with their other classmates. But none of the Life Skills students wanted to participate.
Their friends weren’t there, and they said they would feel too embarrassed, Derst said, so he and other staff helped to organize the program’s own banquet and prom.
Dresses were donated by local shops such as Weddings by Design along with donated tuxedos for the boys. Food was supplied short prom dresses, and this year, boutonnières and corsages were given out to the students.
“They feel like everybody else cheap prom dresses,” Derst said.
The girls looked beautiful; the boys handsome, he added. Students from Permian High School in Odessa drove to the Tall City on Saturday to help decorate the school’s cafeteria and serve food.
“We love these kids,” said Permian High School Senate President Paige Valesquez. “It’s really great, and they deserve all this.”
As the students made their way into the Midland High building and the auditorium, the parents followed prom dresses 2011, snapping photos and sat in the auditorium seats as Derst called the students individually onto stage to adorn them with ribbons around their neck.
The class then presented a Powerpoint presentation chronicling the life of student Anthony Gonzalez, who died March 10 cheap grad dresses, before awarding his mother with an honorary Bulldog Award.
For 16-year-old Daniel Texidor Bridesmaid dresses, it was his second year to attend the banquet, and he was excited to hit the dance floor.
His father Tom, who was unable to attend last year because of medical reasons, came with him this year and sat with Daniel and Daniel’s mother Mary as the three ate dinner.
“You look good cheap Bridesmaid dresses,” the father told his son.
“No, you look good,” Daniel replied.
Marcy Kirby said she was glad her daughter Kaylee, who has Down’s Syndrome, was able to attend the prom this year.
“It gives her a chance to do something she otherwise might not get to do and experience it like the other kids,” she said.
Her 18-year-old daughter flitted around the dance floor with her friends in a white, sparkly dress she bought in Lubbock.
Leslie Melson, 18 A-Line dresses, wore a blue dress she picked out because she said she liked the color. She too was excited to dance and grabbed a friend’s hand as they made their way to the center of the room.
As the DJ dimmed the lights and turned the music up prom dresses, Texidor excitedly went out to the dance floor, too.
