SARASOTA - Samantha Soto's mother Formal dresses, a single parent, had been taking on extra hours at her job to help pay for Soto's upcoming prom at Riverview High School.
But because Samantha, 17, has a two-year-old son of her own, coming up with the money for her big night was still going to be a challenge.
That is why Saturday's "Dress to Impress" event, coordinated by the Junior League of Sarasota cheap Bridesmaid dresses, was so important for Soto. She and best friend Meagan Nelson, also a teen mother cheap long prom dresses, spent about an hour looking at the 250-plus donated dresses in the gymnasium at Girls Inc. while their toddler sons played.
"This is awesome," said Soto, who is graduating a year early from Cyesis, a public school program at Riverview for teenage parents. "We have kids and no money, so this is really helpful."
Teenagers started lining up for "Dress to Impress" before 7:30 a.m., said Amy Thomas, a Junior League member. By the end of the day, the group hoped to help 60 teenagers with not only dresses prom dresses 2011, but also accessories like jewelry, shoes and handbags, hair-styling tips and a photo of them in their dress.
The day attracted girls ― and their mothers grad dresses, grandmothers, aunts or cousins ― from a variety of backgrounds.
