Choosing a date is the most important part of prom. Well, maybe it’s second to choosing a prom dress.
At Aquin High School choosing a date is especially important. Students at Aquin participated in a “prom draw” Thursday. The prom draw is an annual event etched into the Aquin experience since the 1920s.
The prom draw was created to give St. Vincent orphans an equal chance at being asked to prom. While St. Vincent’s is no longer in Freeport, the tradition continues.
The prom draw has evolved from drawing names out of a hat to a spectacle of skits cheap prom dresses 2011, costumes, and boys getting down on one knee to ask their dates to prom.
At the beginning of the prom draw, the girls went to the cafeteria and masked their identities by wrapping themselves in blankets and putting paper bags decorated with cartoon characters over their heads. The boys gathered in the library to dress up in costume and draw their dates from a random pile of names.
Senior Aaron Scibona and juniors Trent Jones, Erich Awender, Alex Jelinek, and Caleb Janssen strut into the cafeteria wearing flapper costumes short prom dresses, wigs plus size prom dresse, and Ring Pops to dance to Beyonce’s “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It).”
They dance a few minutes before removing the paper bags. After a while, they take the hands of five girls long prom dresses, bring them to the middle of the room, and ask their date to prom by handing over their Ring Pops.
Scibona said the group practiced the skit cheap grad dresses, choreographed by their mothers, for about three days. Scibona and Jones agreed that the anticipation of the prom draw and coming up with the most entertaining skit was worth the effort.
“Everybody gets a date and everyone has a good time on prom as a group,” Scibona said.

Dressed up as Harry Potter characters, two of them go riding in on a mop. While one of them waves a magic wand over the girls, another removes the paper bags from their heads.
After a duel with wands and silly string, each boy asks their date to prom and they exchange bags of flowers and goodies.
“It takes the stress out of getting a date,” Collins said. “I think it’s more fun than prom. I really enjoy this part of it.”
