Roman Polanski's Carnage trailer: What do you think?
Manhattanites behaving badly ... Roman Polanksi's Carnage (2011) The trailer for Roman Polanski's latest film opens with two sets of parents engaged in a spot of awkward, but polite, conflict resolution. Their sons have fought in the playground, so Manhattanites Alan (Christoph Waltz) and Nancy (Kate Winslet) brand wholesale have trekked from uptown to broker peace in the Brooklyn apartment of independent wholesaler Michael (John C Reilly) and political activist Penelope (Jodie Foster). It takes just over half an hour (the trailer helpfully provides a time stamp) for a spot of booze and a few terse words to push the passive-aggressive chit-chat into a full-blown shouting match. Nancy bellows at Alan, Penelope screams at Nancy, Michael rages against the whole situation – "I've got no buy wholesale from china time for this touchy-feely bullshit!"We do. Polanski's on good form following his acerbic political satire, The Ghost. Carnage looks like a surprisingly lighthearted follow-up. The source material, God of Carnage – a play by French playwright Yasmina Reza – translated well to English and American theatre audiences, winning an Olivier here and attracting some big names (James Gandolfini, Jeff Daniels, Hope Davis, Marcia Gay Harden) to the principal roles.
