About six years ago, Tina Sparkles got the urge to experiment. She decided to stop buying clothes and start making her own. The concept stuck, and Sparkles hasn't spent a dime on new clothing since.
"I kind of fell in love with repurposing," said the former co-host of the diy network's TV show "Stylelicious." "It kind of changed my perspective on consumerism and how our culture works."

Although cotton is a natural fiber, it's resource intensive and requires pesticides to harvest, she said. Organic cotton is a good alternative but it's also susceptible to insects making the yield less and increasing costs.
The finishing process can also be green, she added. Natural dyes such as vegetable or tea dyes can be used instead of toxic chemicals.
Making it mainstream
